Blossom’s Beginner’s ‘How to’ Guide to Nails

July 4th, 2009

Your facemask’s setting, the conditioner’s doing its magic, now for the nails! We recommend OPI nail products because they’re used by the professionals. If you want a professional finish you want professional products.

1. Moisturise… or apply cuticle cream to the nail bed (where your fingernail sits onto your finger).
2. Soak… your fingertips in a bowl of hot water for 10 minutes to soften the cuticles before pushing them back with an orange stick, which will have a slight lifting effect too.
3. Snip… the excess cuticle skin carefully and gently with a cuticle nipper.
4. Shape… your nails. Some like a square ended nail, some an oval. Myself, I favour a more natural looking, gentle curve. An emery board is best for shaping; leave the metal file at the bottom of the drawer; all too often an amateur’s hand results in fraying and weakened nails. Use firm strokes always in the same direction, no criss-crossing please.
5. Ridges… if indeed you have ridges. We recommend a ridge file but you can go ahead and cut corners with a ridge filling basecoat if time’s an issue for you, just don’t make a habit of it.
6. Colour… your now somewhat delicious nails. Match your outfit, go for natural tones or live/relive your youth with glitter and glam.
Mix the colour in the bottle thoroughly, it’s a paint afterall; no shaking though, it creates air bubbles. Instead, roll it between your palms, this has the added benefit of slightly warming the liquid. Load the brush, wipe off the excess and using as few brush strokes as possible, start with a stroke down the centre. Then apply it to the sides and go for a second coat making sure the first is 110% dry.
7. Insure… your nails stay perfect with a 3rd ‘clear’ coating.
